Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Refinishing hardwood floors can dramatically improve the looks and longevity of your flooring. Refinishing hardwood floors without the proper equipment and knowledge, though, can cause irreparable damage, and in some cases even injury.  When you’re considering refinishing your hardwood floors, it’s best to bring in the professionals and protect your investment in your flooring.  At Floor Coverings International, we provide hardwood flooring refinishing for the greater Waukesha, Brookfield, and Milwaukee, WI areas.

The refinishing process is designed to take worn hardwood floors and restore them to their former shine.  Each flooring project is different and requires different work, but most refinishing jobs will follow a similar outline:

  1. Clean and prep. It’s important to clear away any furniture and dirt before sanding of your floors – we don’t want dirt and dust to cover your furniture!
  2. Sand/Buff. Depending on the damage on your floors, the refinishing team may only need to buff away at the finish, or, if the damage is significant, they may need to sand down to the wood to bring a smooth surface back to your floors.  The end result of this process, though, will be flooring without scratches and other signs of damage.
  3. Remove Dust & Stain. After sanding and buffing, the refinishing team will then remove any dust and dirt caused by the sanding and move on to the stain. Staining is when color or pigment is added to the wood. It’s a great way to customize your space, and our design experts will work with you to find the perfect fit for your project.
  4. Apply Finish. A finish, usually polyurethane that’s either oil- or water- based, will be key to give your refinished floors a polished and durable layer of protection.

Depending on a variety of factors, refinishing your floors could take as little as three days or as much as a week. Homeowners should note that once the process has been completed, it could take up to a month until you can put all of your area rugs and furniture back into place.  Despite what might seem like an intimidating timeline, investing in refinishing is a smart choice for your hardwood flooring and the return on investment on your home.  A professional refinishing team can restore your hardwood flooring to its original glory and might even boost the overall value of your home.
