Laminate floors have become exceedingly popular in Milwaukee homes over the past few years. Homeowners love laminate for its inexpensive combination of beauty and durability. Seriously– what’s not to love about that? Despite its popularity, we’ve found that few people actually know how laminate floors are made. As Milwaukee’s flooring experts, the team at Floor Coverings International Waukesha is here to set the record straight!
Before we dive in, it’s important to note that there are a few variations on how laminate floors are constructed. The method we are describing in today’s article is the most common among the types of laminate that we provide.
1. Base layer
The bottom layer of a laminate board is thin and offers the foundation to keep the rest of the board level. Sometimes there is an additional underlayer which provides extra cushioning and stability.
2. HDF layer
On top of the base layer sits a high-density fiberboard. This is the thickest part of the laminate plank and provides for the bulk of the board. Wood fibers are combined with resin and wax to create an extremely sturdy base.
3. Photo layer
This is where the personalization happens! This decorative layer is a high quality printed image that realistically replicates any design, color or pattern you choose. Thanks to advancements in HD printing technology, laminate floors can be indistinguishable from real hardwood– pretty cool!
4. Top layer
Finally, it’s time for the sealant! This layer protects the printed image from scratches, dents, and UV damage. Just like with solid hardwood, you can choose any type of finish you prefer.
Tying It All Together
These layers are heated and pressed together in sheets at varying levels of pressure. Direct-pressure laminate floors are pressed together at 300-500 psi, while high-pressure laminate floors are pressed using up to 1300 psi. These two gradings determine whether a laminate floor is used for residential or commercial spaces.
