Here at Floor Coverings International Waukesha, we write a lot about how to choose the best flooring for your pets. We understand, though, that many Milwaukee families already have a carpet they love; they would just love it a little more if their pet would stop leaving those pesky repeat stains! We hear you loud and clear, Waukesha. Read on to learn our top three tips for preventing repeat pet stains and keeping your carpet as beautiful as possible, for as long as possible.
- Neutralize the Odor
The single most important way to avoid repeat pet stains is to thoroughly neutralize the odor left behind by previous accidents. Even if your human nose can no longer detect the scent, your pet’s sensitive sense of smell likely can. Once they’ve found their spot, it’s in your pet’s instincts to return to the “scene of the crime” over and over again, so we recommend investing in a high quality odor neutralizer. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, and the right neutralizer will pay for itself in no time.
- Avoid Steam Cleaning
Surprising, we know! Steam cleaning might seem like a perfect way to thoroughly eliminate a pet accident before it happens twice, but this method carries serious risk. If you haven’t been able to completely eliminate the stain before you try steam cleaning, the heat used in the process can set the stain deeply into your carpet. Once your pet’s odor has been thoroughly set, the temptation to return to mark the will be too strong for most pooches.
- Consider Re-carpeting a Section
This option is less extreme than re-carpeting or re-flooring, but it is still a last resort for many homeowners. Unfortunately, if your pet’s stains have sunk through your carpeting and into the padding, removing and replacing one section of the carpet may only be the only way to stop the stains in their tracks.
We hope these tips help in the battle against those tough repeat pet stains.
