If you’re about to welcome a new addition to the family, you’re probably hard at work preparing your child’s nursery. Choosing the right flooring is an important part of the process. Here are a few flooring suggestions to help you determine which features you need and which flooring materials might work best for your nursery.
Carpet is the most popular choice for nurseries because it’s soft and works great when your baby begins to crawl. It also adds warmth and insulation to the room, and dampens sound, which makes it easier to step in and out of the room without waking your child. There can be downsides to carpet, mainly that you’ll need to vacuum regularly because carpet fibers can trap allergens and dust.
However, wool carpet is a great choice for a nursery. It is mostly free of chemical additives and less likely to cause problems for adults and children with asthma or allergies. It is also naturally soil- and stain-resistant, as the wool fibers make it more difficult for spills to sink into the base of the carpet. This will be a huge benefit when your child is old enough to start making messes.
Berber carpets are constructed with uncut, looped fibers. This construction type allows berber carpets to hold up well in high-traffic areas. It prevents spills, dust, and dirt from penetrating the carpet and staining the base, too. This makes berber carpeting stain-resistant and easier to vacuum and clean. The multi-color or flexed pattern that berber carpets typically have also helps to conceal dirt and stains.
Hardwood is growing in popularity as an option for nurseries. It’s beautiful and will last for years with proper care. Additionally, hardwood floors are easy to clean and won’t trap allergens or dust the way that carpets will.
Hardwood, of course, doesn’t provide much softness. If you choose to install hardwood floors, you’ll need to add some area rugs to the nursery when your child starts crawling. You may also notice that your steps make more noise and it’s more difficult to not disturb the baby when you come in, but rugs can help minimize this problem, too.
